American Artist Joins Lisbon Project

MIDDLETOWN, CALIFORNIA, USA, September 4, 2011

American artist Harlan Sadberry has accepted an invitation to participate in a project planned for launch in conjunction with the EXD'11/LISBOA Design Biennale, which starts September 28 in Lisbon, Portugal.  The project is titled how to recall what never happened, in keeping with the Design Biennale's assumption-challenging theme of Useless.

The project coordinators -- Joana Tavares, Cristina Viana and Ana Nobre -- have dubbed themselves Ambas As Duas + Uma.  They are gathering artists, including Sadberry, whose work was chosen in 1981 for another international event in Lisbon, the LIS'81 International Exhibition of Drawings.  LIS'81 ended in tragedy when the entire exhibition was destroyed before it opened by a fire at the National Gallery of Modern Art.  Other invited artists include Agnes Denes, Marlene Dumas, Ellen Lanyon, and Lucio Pozzi.

"The project really seems to be a conceptual art or performance piece of its own," said Sadberry.  Artists are invited to submit proposals never intended to go beyond the "design stage" and no exhibition will ever take place.  However, promotional and commemorative materials will be produced.

"At this early stage of the project I've contributed a recent digital photographic image called Form and Formless," said Sadberry.  He anticipates future collaborative work with the project coordinators.  The photographic image is linked thematically to a prior series of paintings, The Tree of Life.  In the photo a tree is depicted that appears to be more energy than substance.  "It has all the elements of a tree," said Sadberry, "but looks more mythical than real."
